2. Rights Derived from Copyrights
COMPOSITION COPYRIGHT:
Mechanical: the right to copy and reproduce the Composition in a Sound Recording (streams, downloads, and physical formats such as CDs, vinyl, and cassettes. .
Public Performance: the right to publicly perform the Composition, ie an artist performs the Composition, or a Sound Recording of a Composition is played on the radio (in this case, the Artist/Performer on the Recording is publicly performing the Composition of the Songwriter/Composer even if the performance is prerecorded).
Synchronization: the right to synchronize the Composition in timed relation with a moving image i.e., a scene in a film, TV series or Advertisement. Requires a license and fee to be negotiated with the Songwriter(s) or Publisher.
SOUND RECORDING COPYRIGHT:
Distribution: (effectively), the right to sell the sound recording by distributing it to physical and digital music stores. More recently includes monetizing the sound recording via Content ID systems.
Neighboring Rights: the right to publicly broadcast or communicate the Sound Recording, ie a recording is broadcast on FM Radio or played by a DJ at a festival/venue, respectively
Master Use: the right to use the Recording in a ‘derivative’ audio or audio-visual product, including in a Film/TV series etc. (with a Sync license), Sampling into another recording, create a Remix etc. Requires a license for clearance.
