IV. Usage & Royalties
8. Ecosystem Summary + Registration Checklist
Registration is where most IP rights are lost. Follow this checklist for every single release.
Phase 1: The Identifiers (Metadata Essentials)
ISRC (International Standard Recording Code): The “digital fingerprint” for your recording.
ISWC (International Standard Musical Work Code): The fingerprint for your composition.
UPC (Universal Product Code): The barcode for your album or single.
Phase 2: The Registrations
Distributor: Upload your music 4 weeks in advance to ensure “Pre-Save” windows and editorial pitching.
PRO (e.g., SOCAN, ASCAP, BMI): Register the song title and your co-writer splits to collect Performance Royalties.
Mechanical Org (e.g., The MLC, CMRRA): Register to collect your Mechanical Royalties from streams.
Neighboring Rights (e.g., Re:Sound, SoundExchange): Register the Master to collect royalties from digital/satellite radio.
Phase 3: The Profiles
Claim Spotify for Artists and Apple Music for Artists.
Verify your YouTube Official Artist Channel (OAC).
Note: Metadata is the “DNA” of your IP. If the names on your PRO registration don’t match the names on your Distributor upload, your royalties will get stuck in “The Black Box” (unclaimed money).
