III. Master Rights
2. Distribution
This module explains how music travels from your hard drive to a listener’s ears.
1. The DSPs (Digital Service Providers)
DSPs are the storefronts. Examples include Spotify, Apple Music, Tidal, Amazon Music, and YouTube Music.
They do not buy music. They license the right to stream it.
They do not accept uploads from individuals. To prevent fraud and ensure metadata quality, they only accept music from vetted Distributors.
2. Role of Distributors
A distributor is the “logistics company” for your data. Their core jobs are:
Delivery: Sending your audio and cover art to DSPs simultaneously.
Metadata Management: Ensuring your ISRC and UPC codes are correctly attached so you get paid.
Royalty Collection: Gathering the micro-pennies from every stream and paying out the artists.
